Most recall problems happen because:
The dog is distracted or unmotivated.
“Come” predicts something boring (like going inside).
The reward isn’t exciting enough.
The fix? Make recall the most fun part of your dog’s day. Here are games to build that habit.
Game 1: Ping Pong Recall

How to Play:
Two people stand 20–30 feet apart with treats or toys.
Take turns calling your dog (“Fido, come!”).
Reward big every time the dog runs to you—then release back to the other person.
Gradually increase the distance and distractions.
Dogs love the back-and-forth movement, and repetition builds speed and excitement.
Game 2: Hide and Seek
How to Play:
While someone holds your dog, hide somewhere in the house or yard.
Call your dog’s name once.
When they find you, reward with treats or play.
This teaches dogs to seek you out and respond to your call with enthusiasm.
Game 3: Chase and Tug Recall

How to Play:
Get a tug toy or long leash.
Call your dog and run a few steps away as they come (triggering their chase instinct).
When they reach you, engage in a quick game of tug as the reward.
This works especially well for toy-motivated, high-energy dogs.
Game 4: Jackpot Recall
How to Play:
Set up a high-value treat (like a pile of small, soft treats) in your pocket.
Call your dog once, then reward with multiple treats in a row for coming right away.
Occasionally make recall a huge celebration so your dog always thinks “it could be a jackpot!”
Pro Tips for Success
Use a happy, encouraging tone when calling.
Avoid calling your dog only when fun ends (mix in recalls during play so it’s not a punishment).
Practice on a long line in safe, open areas before going off-leash.
End each game on a win to keep enthusiasm high.
Recall doesn’t have to be a chore. By making it fun with games and big rewards, your dog will start running to you every time—because they know “come” means good things happen!
